Midwife Mondays 38: Another week in the world of postnatal care

Only a short one this week…These posts are really hard to write at the moment. I feel like there is a lot that I am saying week-on-week that is just duplicating what I said the previous week, but that, to me, feels a bit like how the postnatal ward works. It feels like it doesn’t vary hugely week by week. Obviously, the women are different, but as you don’t get the same time to get to know the women as you would on, say, a labour ward, it doesn’t feel like each day is as unique.

I know that sounds like a negative thing – I don’t mean it to be. I think it’s just personal preference…

This week on the postnatal ward has been full to the brim with postnatal care; the ward has been the busiest I’ve ever seen it so there hasn’t been a huge amount of time to stop and breathe! I’ve taken more blood (still not missed one yet – yay!), done more full postnatal checks and generally taken on a bit more responsibility. I do feel a lot more confident with what I’m doing and the care I’m giving now, I’ve definitely learnt a lot on this placement – and I’ve had a LOT of baby cuddles too which definitely helps on a long day!

This week coming is my last week so it’s just time to get all my paperwork signed and then it’s back to uni for a few weeks – can’t believe how quickly this year has gone. After this week, it’s three weeks in uni, then study leave, then exams and then it’s time for my 3 weeks of summer break before second year starts! How has that gone by so fast?!?!?!
